Boost Your Metabolism Using Herbs

Herbs may not cause large amounts of weight loss, but with a good weight-loss regimen, herbs can make it easier to lose weight.

There are thermogenic herbs that boost metabolism by “burning” fat. Cayenne and other hot peppers are said to enhance metabolism and curb appetite by taking an ounce daily with meals.  Although cayenne is generally safe, you will want to use it with caution if you suffer from heartburn or ulcers.

Yerba Mate is an herb that contains over 250 known natural compounds, most notably the alkaloids caffeine, theophylline and theobromine. These natural compounds promote central nervous stimulation, and act as diuretics, causing the body to shed water. Additionally, these components appear to suppress appetite, and boost metabolism making this herb ideal in eliminating unwanted fat. The leaves of Yerba alleviate fatigue, suppress appetite, stimulate body and mind, and boost metabolism.  This herb is typically taken as a tea. HerbalWise Slimmer You Organic Herbal Tea contains Yerba Mate.  Many of my customers make a pot of it and keep it in the refrigerator.  It an be consumed hot or cold, although I recommend avoiding cold drinks as they disrupt digestion and can interfere with your weight loss efforts.

The herb Rhodiola has demonstrated a remarkable ability to enhance cellular energy metabolism. Rhodiola increases the chemicals used by the body for energy. This means your muscles and brain have more energy to use, increasing stamina, sharpening mental concentration and memory, and increasing your metabolism to better burn calories.

Poor thyroid function can cause weight gain and a variety of health issues as the thyroid helps regulate metabolism.  Every major system in the body is affected by altered levels of thyroid hormones.   Hypothyroid conditions are on the rise, particularly in women.  Many holistic practitioners believe that stress and poor diet are to blame.

The herb Ashwagandha supports thyroid hormone production and conversion and acts as an adaptogen bringing balance back to the body.  Adaptogenic herbs are herbs that bring the body back into balance.

Kelp and Bladderwrack are seaweeds that provide iodine. Iodine is necessary for adequate thyroid function. If you have low thyroid function and your iodine levels are deficient, you may want to increase your dietary levels of this mineral.

You will also want to avoid foods that may inhibit thyroid function by reducing iodine levels.  Soy is a common offender. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli can also slow down the thyroid especially if eaten raw.  Caffeine can also reduce thyroid function.

Some foods such as coconut and avocado seem to enhance thyroid function.
