Herbs for Men

Here are some great herbs for men seeking natural ways to care for themselves.

Ashwagandha improves the body’s ability to adapt to various types of stress. A wonderful nerve tonic and anti-aging herb. It’s also a potent “brain herb.” Laboratory studies found that Ashwagandha reconnects circuits in the brain, including the pathways in charge of sexual arousal and ejaculation. Repairing “broken circuits” is theoretically one of the ways Ashwagandha helps restore male potency. The effects of Ashwagandha are usually noticed within 48 hours of taking it.

Cornsilk the silky strands that surround a cob of corn can be made as a tea for acute inflammation of the genitor-urinary system such as urethritis, cystitis, and prostatitis. It will cleanse the bladder membranes.

Eleuthero (previously known as Siberian Ginseng) has been used interchangeably for over 2000 years in China as a general tonic to treat various conditions. Used by Olympic coaches in Russia for a while, an Australian clinical test, found that men (and women) who took Eleuthero 8 weeks had 13% strength gains in the pectoral muscles and 15% in the biceps. Another study found that taking Eleuthero for 8 weeks increased the body’s ability to burn fat through exercise by about 43%. It was noted that the benefits of this herb are even more noticeable in beginning athletes.

Nettle root is used as a treatment for prostate problems, including prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition that affects men starting about the age of 40. Extracts of nettle root have proven effective in reducing the inflammation associated with BPF and prostatitis and even slowing the growth of abnormal cells.

Saw Palmetto (a plant native to the south-east of the US) demonstrated “the long-term efficacy and tolerability of Permixon– a brand of standardized saw palmetto extract sold widely in Europe– and support its use as a first-line medical therapy for uncomplicated symptomatic BPH.” according to a long-term study of 150 men with clinically diagnosed BPH and complaints of prostate symptoms.  It’s also a great herb for respiratory health and improved muscle strength.

Yohimbe bark has traditionally been used to increase sexual desire and treat erectile dysfunction. A standardized form can be used to treat conditions of male impotence, in principle very similar to Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra, but without the side effects of heart palpitations, sniffles, or blue vision! Even men without erectile dysfunction note an enhanced experience after taking Yohimbe. Results are noted within 4 hours of taking the herb.  Caution is advised – do not take this herb if you have high blood pressure.

Any of these herbs can be made as a tea or taken in tincture form.
