Insect Bites and Stings

by | Remedy

Summertime is a great time to be outdoors, but it is also a popular time for mosquitoes and other biting insects. Skin-saving remedies can be found right in your kitchen to prevent and treat insect bites and stings. The best part is these remedies are safe, natural and inexpensive.

A couple of simple tricks to help prevent insects from biting are to eat garlic and onion and wear light-colored clothing to deter insects from landing. Certain essential oils will repel insects. (see insect repellent recipe below)

If you do happen to get bit or stung, here are a few suggested natural remedies:

Aloe – Apply aloe to soothe the area.

Basil – Bruise fresh basil leaves and apply to a bee sting.

Vinegar – Apple cider vinegar apply to a bite or sting to stop the itching.

Baking Soda – Mix baking soda with a few drops of water to make a paste. Immediately apply the paste to the bite or sting until the irritation subsides.

All-Natural Insect Repellent

It’s easy to make your own all-natural insect repellent. Below is a formula that I use. It is oil-based so it should not be sprayed onto clothing.

Ingredients:

1.5 oz of Vegetable Oil
.5 oz of Neem Oil
20 drops of Pennyroyal Essential Oil
20 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
20 drops of Bay Essential Oil
20 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Add essential oils to the oil and pour into a spray bottle. Shake well. Spray onto hands and rub onto exposed areas. Repeat as needed.
