Sinus congestion, sinus pain, sinus headache, sinus infection, post-nasal drip — can all be dealt with using simple, natural home remedies.
Prior to learning about natural sinus remedies, I had frequent sinus issues. Typically, they would start with a sinus headache. If I ignored this warning sign, I would begin experiencing sinus congestion and ultimately a sinus infection. Below are the actions I take at the first sign of sinus trouble.
Eliminate dairy and other phlegm-causing foods and drinks – dairy causes phlegm and confestion. Avoid milk, cheese, ice cream — anything with dairy if you have sinus issues. Beer also causes phlegm and should be avoided.
Steam inhalation – boil a pot of water, remove it from the heat, put a towel over your head and the hot water and breathe deeply for at least 3 minutes. This will open up nasal passages so you can breathe through your nose. If your mucus has any color to it when you blow your nose, this indicates infection. I highly recommend obtaining eucalyptus, peppermint, or rosemary essential oil and adding 1-2 drops of it to the hot water. These oils clear congestion and kill infection.
Neti pot – a neti pot looks like a teapot with a long spout. It flushes your sinuses and provides instant relief from the discomfort of sinus pressure and congestion. Most net pots come with packets of saline powder that you mix with distilled water. I love my neti pot!
Herbs – there are many plants that help with sinus problems. You can use them in place of essential oils for a steam inhalation and then strain and drink the remaining water to provide further benefit. My top herbal sinus remedies include eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint. Horseradish is another herb that can be consumed to clear sinuses.
Getting plenty of rest, avoiding stress, and any actions that support your immune system will also help speed resolution to sinus issues.
