According to popular theory, a blend of oils was created by a group of thieves and grave robbers to protect themselves from contracting the plague while robbing the bodies of the gravely ill and deceased. When apprehended, the thieves admitted to using the oils and disclosed the formula in order to receive a less severe punishment for their crimes.
I don’t know whether or not this story is true, but the Thieves Oil Blend was tested at Weber State University in Utah, and found to have a 99.96 percent kill rate against airborne bacteria. The essential oils in this blend are antiseptic, antiviral, and antibacterial. They stimulate the immune system, circulation and respiratory system, and help protect against the flu, colds, bronchitis, pneumonia, sore throats, cuts, and more.
There are many creative ways you can use it for cleaning and disinfecting, maintaining family health and in the care of illness and it is safe for the environment.

If you are interested in making your own thieves oil recipe I recommend you use therapeutic grade oils only. Always dilute with a vegetable or carrier oil before using it. Rubbing it onto the bottom of the feet is highly effective and also the safest place to apply oils, but test for sensitivity first. The following Thieves oil recipe is excellent for daily use as protection against germs, especially during the cold and flu season.
200 drops of Clove Oil (Syzgium aromaticum)
175 drops of Lemon Oil (Citrus Limon)
100 drops of Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum verum)
75 drops of Eucalyptus Oil (Eucalyptus radiata)
50 drops of Rosemary Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Store in a dark glass container away from heat and sunlight. Preferably in a cool location.
*Note: One 15 ml bottle of essential oil contains approximately 250 drops and one 5 ml bottle contains approximately 85 drops.
Thieves Oil Applications
All-purpose Spray – 1 drop of Thieves oil blend per ounce of water. Add the oil first, then add water. Shake vigorously before each use. Use for cleaning and disinfecting around the home, purifying the air and eliminating odors. This is great for wiping down cell-phones, disinfecting kitchen rags/sponges/brushes/towels, toothbrushes, and children’s toys.
Topical Oil – 1 drop of Thieves oil to 4 drops carrier oil. Massage on the bottom of the feet, lower back, neck and behind the ears.
Air Purifier – Put into a diffuser or add several drops of oil onto a cotton ball and place in home, office, car, or hotel air vents to mask odor and purify the air.
Thieves Oil for Common Ailments
Flu: Dilute 15 drops with 15 drops of carrier oil. Apply to lower back (where viruses and bacteria tend to hibernate), to the upper back of thighs, and back of neck to help with symptoms.
Immune support: Dilute 1 drop of thieves to 4 drops carrier oil and apply to feet. Apply twice daily, morning and night, for extra support during cold and flu season.
Bronchitis: Apply topical oil recipe above to lower back, sternum, chest and throat, and sinus areas.
Sore throat: Add 2-3 drops to 2 tbsp. of water and gargle
Cuts and scrapes: Dilute 1 drop thieves oil to 4 drops of vegetable or carrier oil to prevent and apply to wound to help prevent infection and speed healing and you can apply diluted thieves on gauze or band-aid and cover wound or scrape
Head and lung congestion: Place a few drops in a steaming bowl of hot water, cover head with towel and inhale vapors.
For protection against colds, flu, and other infectious disease apply to the bottom of feet.
